Report: Stephen Gostkowski in play to receive franchise tag or transition tag

The New England Patriots are considering placing a franchise or transition tag on kicker Stephen Gostkowski, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

If New England elected to place the franchise tag on Gostkowski, he would receive roughly $5 million in 2019, per the NFLPA. If the Patriots placed the transition tag on him, the team would get the opportunity to match any offer by another team when Gostkowski hits free agency.

Gostkowski has played with the Patriots for 13 years, and has three Super Bowl wins during that span. He has hit 87.4 percent of his field goal attempts during his career.

Gostkowski’s predecessor, Adam Vinatieri, played the 2005 season on the franchise tag and signed with the Indianapolis Colts the next offseason.
