Report: Steelers free up salary cap space through Stephon Tuitt’s contract

NFL reporter Field Yates sent out a tweet early Tuesday morning that according to a source, the Pittsburgh Steelers did a little money shuffling to free up some much-needed salary cap space.

According to Yates, the Steelers converted %5.195 million of Tuitt’s base salary for 2019 into a signing bonus which created nearly $4 million in additional cap space. The Steelers were sitting on less than $1.1 million in cap space prior to this move.

Why are the Steelers moving money around? This is likely in response to two contracts the Steelers are currently working on. Cornerbacks Mike Hilton and Joe Haden are both eyeing new deals, Hilton’s could definitely require some extra cap space to give him the raise he’s looking for.
