Report: Steelers Could Consider Mike Tomlin Trade With Rebuilding Team

The idea of the Pittsburgh Steelers trading coach Mike Tomlin in the offseason continues to gain steam.

On Saturday, The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that the 7–7 Steelers, who have lost three consecutive games, could be willing to move on from Tomlin if the club misses the playoffs for the second straight season.

“Mike Tomlin’s future in Pittsburgh appears to be murky, mostly based on the Steelers’ recent performances against the Cardinals, Patriots and Colts, all losses,” said Russini.

The “murky” outlook for the 51-year old Super Bowl champion coach has opened the door for a potential trade for draft assets, according to Russini.

“There has been chatter that perhaps the Steelers would consider trading Tomlin to Washington, Chicago or even Carolina to get back some picks,” added Russini. “Tomlin’s contract expires in 2024, and it’s well known the Steelers organization won’t engage in extension talks with players or coaches during the season. So we wait and see.”

The Steelers, who started 6–3 this season, have lost four of their last five games down the stretch.

Pittsburgh will need to win two of their final three regular season games in order to keep Tomlin's incredible streak of 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record in tact.

The Steelers, who have failed to win a playoff game since 2016, will look to keep their postseason playoff hopes alive when they host the Bengals (8–6) at Acrisure Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
