Fans aren’t the only ones not allowed to attend Saturday’s season-opener, with reports coming out that MSU’s famous mascot Sparty is also being left off the guest list.
Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday afternoon that cheerleaders, the marching band and Sparty will not be allowed to attend Saturday’s match-up between Michigan State and Rutgers. The decision was made to “minimize risk factors” for players, coaches and others on the field.
Confirmed through an MSU spokesman there will not be cheerleaders, marching band or Sparty at Saturday’s game. All things to minimize risk factors for players and coaches on the field.

It was already known fans wouldn’t be allowed to attend — besides cardboard cutouts — but some still thought Sparty, cheerleaders and the band would be there to somewhat resemble a normal game experience.
This decision also means another MSU fan favorite — Zeke the Wonderdog — won’t be in attendance either.

This shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise with the Big Ten taking precautionary measures to more extreme levels than other conferences, but still interesting to note. I can’t remember the last time Sparty wasn’t in attendance for a home football game, making Saturday an even more weird game day experience.
Kickoff between the Spartans and Scarlet Knights is set for noon on Saturday, and the game can be seen on the Big Ten Network. Michigan State is a near two-touchdown favorite in this match-up.
