The Rams, the NFL and the city of St. Louis have been engaged in an ongoing dispute for the last four years, but the legal battle could be coming to an end. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a settlement is nearing completion after both Rams owner Stan Kroenke and NFL officials were in St. Louis on Tuesday for court-ordered mediation.
The financial terms of the potential settlement were not disclosed but it would prevent this from going to trial, which it is scheduled to do. The trial was set for Jan. 10 but Kroenke was pushing to settle the suit before it got to that point.
The city of St. Louis and the Regional Convention & Sports Complex Authority filed a lawsuit four years ago against the NFL and the Rams for breaching an agreement when the team moved to Los Angeles in 2016, accusing them of fraud and misleading the city over the relocation.
Kroenke recently threatened to settle the suit on his own, separately from the NFL and other owners, which would have stuck the league with significant expenses. He also upset other owners when they learned that he may be trying to back out of his promise to cover tens of millions of dollars in legal expenses.
