Report: Sean McVay knew early in the week that John Wolford would start

Sean McVay opened the week by saying he didn’t know who would start at quarterback for the Rams against the Seahawks. Then as the week progressed, he made it clear that he still didn’t know.

It turns out this was a bit of gamesmanship because McVay reportedly knew early in the week that John Wolford would be the team’s starter over Jared Goff. McVay just didn’t want to let the news out, which would’ve made it easier for the Seahawks to prepare for Los Angeles’ offense.

“Typically, when teams meet for the third time in a season, there aren’t many mysteries,” Tom Rinaldi said on FOX’s broadcast, as transcribed by Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire. “In this case, there was one: Who the starting quarterback would be for the Rams. Sean McVay made the decision early in the week, telling his team early in the week that it would be John Wolford. As a result, Wolford got the majority of the snaps through the week, as he’s had the full support of Jared Goff, who continues to recover from surgery on that throwing thumb.”

That’s not entirely surprising. Goff is 12 days removed from thumb surgery, and clearly he’s not 100% healthy. In a colder environment, it may have been tough for Goff to grip the ball normally. So, he went with the younger Wolford, who’s making his second career start.
