Seahawks to get Jadeveon Clowney in trade with Texans

The Seattle Seahawks once again struck a major trade right before roster cuts, agreeing today to acquire star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from the Houston Texans in exchange for Barkevious Mingo, Jacob Martin and a third-round pick in 2020.

The clubs have yet to confirm. Clowney needs to sign his franchise tag in order to be traded, but he reportedly agreed to do so if Seattle was the acquiring team, so assuming he does he will be in Seattle on a one-year contract.

Clowney, the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, had nine sacks last season and 9.5 the year before. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past three seasons. In his career, he has 29 sacks, 64 tackles for loss and 67 quarterback hits.

With Ezekiel Ansah, L.J. Collier and now Clowney, the Seahawks have a formidable defensive front to go along with elite linebackers and a young, but developing, secondary.

Mingo struggled to adjust to his new position as an edge defender and was likely going to get cut this afternoon before the 1 p.m. PT deadline to set the 53-man roster. Martin was a promising young pass rusher, but the addition of Clowney would have relegated him to a special teams role anyway.
