Report: “Scottish Hammer” Jamie Gillan wins the Browns punting job

We have our first real surprise of the Browns roster cutdowns. Based on a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team will keep undrafted rookie punter Jamie Gillan and part ways with veteran Britton Colquitt.

Gillan, popularly known as “The Scottish Hammer”, earned the job thanks to very impressive hang time and leg strength. He’s also proven he will lay a licking on return men; Gillan led the Browns in preseason special teams tackles.

It’s a leap of faith to choose the rookie from Scotland (via Arkansas-Pine Bluff) over a proven, high-level commodity like Colquitt. The veteran was one of the NFL’s most consistent punters and best at pinning opponents deep inside their own territory.
