Report: Sanford Stadium to begin limited alcohol sales in 2019

On Wednesday, UGA Athletics Director Greg McGarity announced that the home of the Georgia Bulldogs, Sanford Stadium, would begin limited alcohol sales during the upcoming 2019 season, according to DawgNation.

According to McGarity, “It’s available to a certain level of donors, but it’s not accessible to fans in general seating areas. We’re permitted to do it under the current rules as it stands now. We’re just doing it as a benefit to our donors.”

The sales will reportedly take place in a portion of the 200 level of the stadium, which is only available to high-level donors. These donors are part of the Magill Society, which requires its members to donate at least $25,000 to the UGA Athletic Association over the course of five years.

The topic of alohol sales has been very controversial in recent years. Many contend that college stadiums should offer all people of age the chance to buy alcohol. Some schools, like Tulane, have followed this model. In general, SEC schools have allowed alcohol sales in controlled settings, as UGA seems to be doing with this decision.

While this may not satisfy general fans who are looking for something to drink during Georgia games, its still an unprecedented measure for the university as a way to thank donors for their contributions to the school.
