Report: Saints sign fullback Michael Burton after minicamp tryout

The New Orleans Saints signed another player after a success tryout during rookie minicamp. Per a report from Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune, the Saints reached an agreement with former Chicago Bears fullback Michael Burton, who also played for the Detroit Lions from 2015 to 2016.

Burton, 27, hasn’t enjoyed the flexibility offered other fullbacks around the league. He’s recorded just eight rushing attempts and only a dozen targets in his first four years. His previous teams have mostly tasked him with blocking for teammates.

Last year, Burton was a healthy scratch in eight games and only played sparingly when he dressed, notching 10 or more snaps just once in those appearances. Still, he figures to offer some offseason competition with the Saints’ incumbent fullback, Zach Line. Line was the only other fullback on New Orleans’ roster before they brought in Burton.

It’s further proof that rookie minicamp isn’t an opportunity just for first-year players; the Saints also signed wide receiver Cyril Grayson, who spent most of the last two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
