Report: Saints re-sign linebacker Craig Robertson

The New Orleans Saints retained special teams captain and backup linebacker Craig Robertson, per a report from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. According to Garafolo’s report, Robertson agreed to return to New Orleans on a two-year contract worth more than $4 million, a nice haul for the 31-year old free agent.

Robertson originally joined the Saints on a three-year, $5 million contract and played often as a starter before being bumped down to the special teams units. He’s excelled in that role, leading the team in special teams snaps played (well, tying with quarterback Taysom Hill — they each logged 343 reps covering punts and kickoffs last season) and earning the coveted captain’s patch. He’s now been rewarded with a contract extension; given his recent performance, he could very well see every penny earned.

This signing gives the Saints some stability in an area that could have been shaken up following the turnover of its coaching staff. Darren Rizzi will call the shots on special teams in 2019, his first season with the Saints after spending the better part of a decade with the Miami Dolphins. Returning veterans like Robertson and safety Chris Banjo (as well as Hill, of course) gives Rizzi’s new staff plenty to work with.
