Report: Saints could pursue Ryan Tannehill as backup QB

There’s a scenario where the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints end up swapping quarterbacks, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Dolphins are hosting Bridgewater on a free agent visit in a last-second bid to sign him before the Saints can reach a formal agreement with him. Simultaneously, the Dolphins are looking offload their former franchise quarterback in Ryan Tannehill, and Rapoport suggests he would be a target for the Saints as they look to sign a new backup for Drew Brees.

It’s an easy connection to make. Tannehill was drafted by Jeff Ireland, former Dolphins general manager and current Saints assistant general manager. He played well for interim head coach Dan Campbell during the 2015 season; Campbell now coaches tight ends for the Saints, and also holds the title of assistant head coach. Tannehill is a quarterback the Saints are very familiar with.

But there’s plenty of moving parts involved before the Saints can even consider signing Tannehill, namely him still being under contract with Miami and carrying a $13.4 million hit in dead money should they release him. The Dolphins have kind of put themselves into a corner here.

Still, it’s a situation to monitor. Especially with Bridgewater actively visiting with Miami concerning his future.
