Saints, Wil Lutz agree on 5-year extension

The New Orleans Saints agreed to a contract extension with kicker Wil Lutz, as first reported by Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune. The contract is for five years, securing the 24-year-old kicker’s future in New Orleans.

The dollar amounts have yet to be reported. Lutz broke a franchise record for kicking accuracy in 2018 that was set decades ago by Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen.

Lutz was set to be a restricted free agent, but the Saints decided to lock him up long-term rather than forcing him to play 2019 on a one-year deal.

This is the latest move the Saints have made to solidify their special teams. Pro Bowl punter Thomas Morstead signed a five-year extension last year, and core special teamers Craig Robertson and Chris Banjo re-signed this offseason. That’s a lot to work with for new special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi, who spent the last decade filling the same position with the Miami Dolphins. It’s good to see the Saints prioritizing an important area of the game.
