Report: Rutgers to hire Chiefs defensive quality control coach Jay Valai

The Chiefs will shed another defensive coach from Bob Sutton’s staff.

Jay Valai spent the 2018 season with the Chiefs as a defensive quality control coach after two seasons in the same role at the University of Georgia. The former Wisconsin safety is heading back to the college game and will coach cornerbacks at Rutgers, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

The head coach of Rutgers, Chris Ash, was Valai’s position coach at Wisconsin during his final season.

The Kansas City Chiefs struggled on defense in 2018. Preparedness seemed to be a problem at times. Quality control coaches are typically in charge of minutiae for getting teams prepared, such as film study, advanced scouting reports and practice scripts.

Perhaps with a new defensive quality control coach under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs can get the defense better prepared to face their opponents in 2019.
