Report: Rookie WR Hakeem Butler could land on IR with hand fracture

The Arizona Cardinals have decisions to make at wide receiver. Many wonder whether they will keep six or seven on the roster and who they will be. With three rookies they want to keep, it will be hard to keep everyone.

That might be a little easier with news about fourth-round pick Hakeem Butler.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Butler could land on injured reserve. He reportedly has an avulsion fracture in his hand.

If the Cardinals decide to place him on injured reserve, he would not take up a spot on the 53-man roster, either freeing up space for another receiver to make the team or allowing them to keep someone at another position.

One thing is certain: Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Tuesday Butler will not play the rest of the preseason.

Butler’s rookie season was believed to be developmental. He made some plays in training camp but also dropped passes and was clearly behind other rookies like Andy Isabella and KeeSean Johnson.

The Cardinals won’t have to make a decision until final roster cuts on August 31.
