Report: Rockets sign undrafted Shamorie Ponds

There appears to be some confusion on if it actually happened or not, but the Houston Rockets reportedly signed Shamorie Ponds, a junior from St. John’s University on Thursday night.

Ponds went undrafted, but reportedly still got a three-year deal with the Rockets.

The soon-to-be 21-year-old had pretty great averages this past season: 19.7 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, 5.1 assists per game and 2.6 steals per game. He shot 52.1 % from the field, 35.3 % from three-point range and 83.6 % from the free throw line.

The confusion behind if he was actually signed comes after Trey Rodriguez announced Ponds was signing a free agent deal with the Rockets. But then Ponds’ agency took down their social media post about it.

Ponds, who is only 6’1” was raved about by many NBA draft reporters, so it’ll be interesting to see if he really does get his start with the Rockets.

ESPN confirmed that Ponds will play with the Rockets in summer league — which starts in Las Vegas on July 1 — but that the structure of the type of deal he signed with the team remains uncertain.
