Report reveals Barrier Reef permits oversight

A Queensland Senator is calling for a review of some permits issued for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park after they were found to have been issued without proper scrutiny.

An Auditor-General report has found up to 9 per cent of permits issued by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority between July 2012 and 2014 were done so without undergoing a risk assessment.

It also found almost half of the permits issued only considered some risks to the reef.

Greens' Senator Larissa Waters said the oversight was a result of budget cuts and called for a review of every permit issued in that two-year period.

"We need to review those permits and make [sure] they haven't been issued far too hastily," she said.

"I want to know that they were properly considered and that the risks were properly considered."

The report does not say which permits were not properly assessed.

A spokesman for Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the authority had already put in a new permit compliance plan.
