Report: Redskins targeting Thursday for Derrius Guice’s debut

The Washington Redskins would like to get Derrius Guice on the field sooner rather than later.

Guice still hasn’t been 100 percent cleared to get back on the field and see some contact, something Jay Gruden confirmed again Monday.

A report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport then contextualized the apparent plan:

Note after a day at the Redskins: The tentative plan is for RB Derrius Guice (knee surgeries) to get some work in the preseason game vs the #Falcons, I’m told. It’ll likely be his only action of the preseason but getting some contact before the regular season would be important.

It sounds like Guice could be cleared at any point now, though his being ready for Thursday’s game against Atlanta might be a tad optimistic at this point.

Guice figures to be a key cog in the offense alongside Adrian Peterson when he does get back, but the lack of full clearance after multiple surgeries continues to give pause to the outlook.

Generally, starters don’t see the field in the fourth preseason game. But if Guice misses Thursday and later receives clearance, he might end up being an exception as coaches try to get him some contact work before the games start to matter.
