Report: Redskins name change to likely come before 2020 NFL season

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Redskins are likely to be renamed ahead of the 2020 NFL season amidst mounting pressure from sponsors, fans, and alumni.

“The move sets the stage to resolve one of sports’ most prominent battles over offensive team names. Washington will likely be renamed before the 2020 season begins, two people familiar with the matter said,” Andrew Beaton and Louise Radnofsky wrote.

On Friday morning, the team announced that they would be conducting a thorough review of the name, and head coach Ron Rivera stated that it was a matter than meant a lot to him. Team owner Dan Snyder, who say in 2013 that he would “NEVER” change the name, has seemed to sway a bit.
In the statement, team owner Dan Snyder said that this process “allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise, but also inpt from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the NFL, and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field.”
There is no timetable for the review, but it seems likely that if a change is going to take place, it would happen before the upcoming season.
