Report: Redskins expected to use franchise tag on RG Brandon Scherff

It doesn’t come as a major surprise, but the Washington Redskins reportedly are expected to use the franchise tag on right guard Brandon Scherff for the 2020 season, hoping to sign him to a long-term deal in the future.

Scherff, who would be the top RG on the free-agent market should he be available to other teams, was rumored to garner a lot of attention and earn a contract that would have him be the highest-paid RG in the NFL. By placing the tag on him, the Redskins will make him one of the highest-paid guards in the NFL for the 2020 season.

Aside from keeping Scherff in Washington for one year, this move would be extremely smart for the Redskins, as they may not be quite sold on Scherff as far as a long-term investment goes. With a new coaching staff in the building, it’s understandable for the team to want to see one more year from him before signing away a major part of their future salary cap. Scherff also has dealt with some injuries as of late, so making sure that he can stay healthy is also a big part of it as well.

The Redskins have until July 15th to place a tag on Scherff.
