Report: Ravens trying to sign S Bennett Jackson from Jets practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens need some help at safety. After losing starting safety Tony Jefferson to a season-ending knee injury in Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Week 6 saw Baltimore lose another safety for the season. Second-year safety Deshon Elliott was injured against the Cincinnati Bengals and according to coach John Harbaugh, the Ravens are considering it a season-ender.

With the secondary still struggling at times and injuries beginning to pile up, Baltimore is aiming to bring back a familiar face. According to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec, the Ravens are working on signing safety Bennett Jackson from the New York Jets’ practice squad.

Jackson was with Baltimore this offseason and played well both throughout training camp and the preseason. But with so much depth at safety, he was among those cut as the Ravens trimmed down to their 53-man roster. The Jets, led by former Baltimore scout Joe Douglas, scooped him up quickly, claiming him off waivers before making his way to New York’s practice squad in the middle of September.

The Ravens have been decimated by injuries, mostly in their secondary. In addition to both Jefferson and Elliott’s injuries, safety Brynden Trawick and cornerbacks Tavon Young and Iman Marshall went to injured reserve as well with their respective injuries. Add cornerback Jimmy Smith’s knee sprain suffered just six snaps into Week 1 as well and you have a secondary that has been trying to replace an impact player seemingly every week this season.
