Report: Rams open to trading Aqib Talib, other veterans

Few teams have been as active on the trade market the last two years as the Los Angeles Rams, and despite making three trades already last week, Les Snead may not be done. With the trade deadline coming up on Tuesday, the Rams are reportedly open to trading away veterans.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Rams are willing to trade Aqib Talib and other veterans who are in the final year of their contracts in order to free up money to pay “a player like Jalen Ramsey.” Schefter also reported that Talib “turned down the chance to be traded last week,” indicating the Rams have had talks about dealing the cornerback recently.

It’s not surprising that Los Angeles would be open to moving Talib, who’s currently on IR with a rib injury, but the reasoning doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Talib will be a free agent after this season, so trading him now won’t free up any money in 2020 or beyond to pay Ramsey.

The only way it’ll save the Rams some cap space is if they plan to sign him to an extension after this season, which seems unlikely anyway.

As for other veterans who might be on the block, Michael Brockers could make some sense. The Rams have Morgan Fox playing significant snaps at defensive end in the rotation, and Sebastian Joseph-Day has played well at nose tackle.
