Report: Rams hiring Wade Phillips’ son Wes as TEs coach

With several NFL teams hiring young, offensive-minded head coaches this offseason, Wade Phillips did what any good father would: Pump up his son as a top candidate. That’s exactly what he did last month when discussing his son Wes Phillips as a head-coaching candidate.

“Wes is a young offensive coach that knows Sean McVay, just if anybody’s looking for another head coach. He knows him real well,” the elder Phillips said.

Phillips’ endorsement didn’t land Wes a head-coaching job, but it did bring him closer to his son. According to Alex Marvez of Sporting News, Wes is joining the Rams as their tight ends coach.

The move was first reported by Grant Paulsen last month, though his role with the Rams wasn’t previously disclosed.

Shane Waldron served as the pass game coordinator and tight ends coach in 2018, but it sounds like he’ll simply serve in that former role and lose the latter, according to Ian Rapoport.

Wes Phillips was the Redskins’ tight ends coach from 2014-18, but Washington hired a new guy for the position this offseason. Prior to landing with the Redskins, Phillips spent time with the Cowboys, Wade’s former team.
