Report: Raiders cutting former Packers WR Jordy Nelson

Jordy Nelson’s late-career run with Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders will only last one year.

The Raiders are cutting the former Green Bay Packers receiver, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Nelson, who turns 34 years old in May, originally signed a two-year, $14.2 million deal in Oakland after the Packers cut him last May. He caught 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns with the Raiders last season.

The Raiders paid out Nelson’s $3.6 million roster bonus last December in a contract restructuring but decided against keeping him after trading for Antonio Brown and signing Tyrell Williams. Nelson’s entire 2019 base salary would have guaranteed on Friday, necessitating the move.

A reunion with the Packers looks unlikely, given Nelson’s age and the Packers recent tendering of Geronimo Allison. In fact, there’s probably a better chance of Nelson retiring from the NFL than returning to the Packers next season.

The Raiders are scheduled to play the Packers in Green Bay next season, so Thursday’s news eliminated an opportunity for Nelson to return to Lambeau Field as an opponent in 2019.
