Report: Raiders’ contract talks with RB Josh Jacobs ‘Not going well’

The Raiders may have a holdout on their hands.

Rookie running back Josh Jacobs remains unsigned, and according to a report, negotiations aren’t going well, either.

There’s still ample time for Oakland to ink Jacobs, who’s one of the Raiders’ three first-round selections from the 2019 NFL draft, and avoid a holdout. The first practice of training camp isn’t until July 27, though rookies are scheduled to report before that.

Here’s what The Athletic’s Vic Tafur reported on the situation.

Running back Josh Jacobs, one of the team’s three first-round picks in April, is the only Raiders draft pick still unsigned and league sources say the negotiations have not been going well. There is a growing sentiment that Jacobs will not be at camp when rookies report on July 23.

While this is a situation to monitor for Raiders fans, it’s nothing to get too concerned about just yet. Forget about holdouts like that of former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, and think more about recent rookie holdouts, such as last year’s two-week absence of Bears linebacker Roquan Smith.

Since Russell’s holdout, which caused him to miss much of his initial campaign, a rookie wage scale has been implemented. The amount Jacobs will make is already known by both negotiating parties; what’s being discussed is how Jacobs will be paid.

Tafur points out that six first-round picks remain unsigned, so Jacobs has company, and the Raiders must be working diligently to ensure their rookie feature back is on the practice field during training camp.
