Report: Raiders' Aldon Smith detained by police for public intoxication

Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith was detained for public intoxication by police in San Francisco Thursday morning after a vehicle he was riding in crashed into a police car, KTVU reported.

Smith was expected to be released when he is sober and no charges will be filed, according to the KTVU report. Smith's girlfriend was driving the car and she was arrested on suspicion of DUI, NBC Bay Area reported.

Smith, who has been suspended by the NFL since November, 2015 and was awaiting a possible meeting with the league later this month to lift his ban, but Thursday's incident makes a reinstatement any time soon very unlikely.

When reached Thursday, an NFL spokesman declined comment on Smith.

At 8:33 a.m., an unmarked police sedan with three San Francisco police officers inside was westbound on China Basin toward Third Street in front of the city's public safety building, San Francisco police Officer Giselle Talkoff said.

The sedan was pulling into an enclosed parking garage's sidewalk entrance when a westbound SUV tried to pass them and struck the sedan's front right side with its front left bumper, Talkoff said.

Two of the sedan's three officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while Smith's 25-year-old girlfriend, who was driving, and her two adult male passengers remained on scene.

Police detained Smith's girlfriend and also detained the SUV's front-seat passenger, reported by KTVU to be Smith, for public intoxication. Police believe he will not face charges, Talkoff said.

The other passenger cooperated with police and was released at the scene.

The roadway was reopened to traffic by 10 a.m.

This is the second time in the past month that Smith has been questioned in an incident. Smith was investigated for a "domestic incident" in February after an unnamed person filed a report.

The SFPD hasn't released any further information about that case.
