Report: QB A.J. McCarron could miss Texans-Packers preseason opener with thumb injury

The Houston Texans could be thin at backup quarterback when they take on the Green Bay Packers to open up preseason Thursday night at Lambeau Field.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, second-string quarterback A.J. McCarron injured his thumb during Tuesday’s joint practice with the Packers. Trainers looked at McCarron’s hand during practice, and coach Bill O’Brien had no updates after practice.

The Texans will have to make a move prior to Thursday’s game, unless the plan is to give third-string quarterback Joe Webb every snap after starter Deshaun Watson’s opening series. It would be outside the realm of possibility for Watson to play more than a series in the preseason opener, even with the injury to McCarron.
