Report: Police officer accused of killing Leandro Lo arrested after turning himself in

The police officer accused of shooting and killing Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Leandro Lo at a concert Sunday has turned himself in.

According to a report from Brazilian news outlet G1, Henrique Otavio Oliveira Volozo was arrested Sunday after a judge approved his detainment for 30 days, a temporary sentence that can be extended upon for 30 more days. Volozo currently awaits testimony in court.

Per a police report obtained by MMA Junkie, Lo was shot in the forehead and a brief, physical altercation with Volozo ensued. A dispute allegedly started when Volozo took a bottle off Lo’s table. Lo briefly took down Volozo and controlled him. When the two separated, Volozo pulled out a gun and fired at Lo.

According to witnesses, Lo was then kicked in the head twice. After that, the suspect fled. Lo was rushed to a local hospital and a warrant was issued for Volozo’s arrest.

New outlet UOL also has reported Volozo, 30, previously served six months in prison for “disrespecting an official” in 2017 but was acquitted of an alleged assault.

Lo, 33, was a multi-time BJJ world champion. His resume included victories in the World Cup, Pan American championships and Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championships.

After news broke of Lo’s death, tributes poured in from around the combat sports community, including Wanderlei Silva, Charles Oliveira, Ronaldo Souza, Demian Maia, and more.
