DETROIT _ The Detroit Pistons appear close to adding wing depth for a playoff push.
ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting the Pistons are expected to receive a commitment from free-agent shooting guard Wayne Ellington.
Ellington, who spent 2{ seasons with the Miami Heat, was traded to the Phoenix Suns _ along with guard Tyler Johnson _ on Wednesday.
Ellington will receive a buyout and become a free agent. He won't clear waivers until the weekend.
A source told the Free Press several months ago the Pistons were monitoring the situation with the Heat to see if Ellington would become available.
Ellington is a former client of Pistons vice chairman and minority owner Arn Tellem, a former agent, who remains close to Ellington.
Ellington is a career 38 percent 3-point shooter, but had fallen out of the rotation with the Heat.
The appeal is his shooting, as the Pistons rank 29th in 3-point shooting.
The trades of Stanley Johnson and Reggie Bullock saved the Pistons money under the luxury tax, allowing the team to consider candidates on the buyout market.
The Pistons have 15 players under contract, so they would have to waive someone.
Third-year pro Henry Ellenson is the likely candidate since he isn't in the franchise's long-term plans.
Some fans would like the Pistons to jettison veteran Jose Calderon, but he is likely needed for point guard depth.
The Pistons (24-29) are 1{ games behind the Heat for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot.
