Report: PGA Tour won’t allow fans back rest of season

The PGA Tour is expected to announce that the nine events left on the 2019-20 season schedule will be conducted without fans, according to a report from Golf Channel citing multiple sources.

The report also states that pro-ams, a big revenue generator for tournaments, will also not take place for the rest of this season.

Rickie Fowler, who shot a third-round 66 at the fan-less Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village Golf Club on Saturday, was asked about the report after his round.

“That’s the first I’m hearing of it,” he said. “I think with everything going on and the health and safety concerns and everything that the Tour has done up to this point, I’ve got to stand with them as far as saying it’s the right decision, and I think we’re seeing that there’s been some more spikes and nothing has necessarily calmed down.

“In a way, it could have been inevitable at some point with where things were starting to go, but I think the Tour has done a great job thus far, and everything they’ve put in place, all the protocols, and sometimes it’s on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis trying to learn and progress as we go on. Yeah, like I said, first I’m hearing of it, but I think they’ve done a great job, and I stand by them with their decision.”

Several upcoming tournaments still have links to purchase tickets on their websites as of Saturday.

This week’s Workday event was never slated to have fans but the Memorial Tournament, Jack Nicklaus’ annual bash in Dublin, Ohio, was making plans to have fans, although in limited numbers. But on Monday, tournament organizers decided to not allow fans on site.
