Report: Patriots waiving WRs Braxton Berrios

UPDATE: The Patriots have not waived Gunner Olszewski, contrary to earlier reports. He was informed of his release, but the Patriots ultimately traded Keion Crossen to make room for Olszweski.

The New England Patriots have waived receivers Braxton Berrios and Gunner Olszewski, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Berrios put together a strong preseason and training camp in 2019 after the Patriots drafted him in the seventh round in 2018. He spent all of his rookie season on injured reserve, but it seemed he had a shot at cracking into the 53-man roster in 2019 with receivers Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon and Demaryius Thomas not participating in practice at the start of camp. As those established veterans returned to the field, Berrios’ chances of making the team began to dwindle.

Olszewski, meanwhile, joined the Patriots as an undrafted rookie out of a DII school, Bemidji State. Though he played cornerback in college, he was playing receiver for New England. That was before the fourth preseason game, when he played receiver, kick returner, punt returner, safety and cornerback. His versatility wasn’t enough for the Patriots to make a roster spot.

If they clear waivers, they would be good candidates for the practice squad.
