Report: Patriots tried to trade for WR Randall Cobb in 2018

The New England Patriots were unsuccessful in their effort to acquire Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb last season.

According to Jay Glazer of The Athletic, the Patriots called the Packers and attempted to trade for Cobb “at one point” last year.

It’s unclear when exactly the trade discussions happened. Cobb missed nine games with a hamstring injury last season, but he was back in a limited capacity at last year’s trade deadline. The Patriots might have inquired about Cobb’s availability during the offseason, possibly when Cobb’s future in Green Bay appeared in jeopardy in February and March.

Glazer revealed the information while answering a question about the Patriots’ pursuit of a receiver this offseason. Cobb, who caught 38 passes for 383 yards and two scores in 2018, will be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year opens next week and could be a realistic target of the Patriots.

It is expected that Cobb will depart Green Bay after eight seasons with the Packers this offseason. While still only 28, Cobb has struggled with injuries and shrinking production since signing a four-year deal after a Pro Bowl season in 2014.

GM Brian Gutekunst was noncommittal about bringing back Cobb when asked at the NFL Scouting Combine last week.

“Randall’s been a great player for us. He’s one of the all-time Packers. We’re still putting that puzzle together,” Gutekunst said. “Obviously, with draft meetings and free agency meetings, and now we’re here at the combine. As we get all the information together as we approach the next few weeks, we’ll get into that.”
