Report: Patriots to host Mississippi State safety Johnathan Abram for visit

The New England Patriots are set to host Mississippi State safety Johnathan Abram for a pre-draft visit, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

New England is one of a handful of teams on Abram’s schedule, including the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams. Abram impressed during his interviews at both his pro day and at the 2019 NFL Combine, per Pelissero.

In 2018, Abram had 47 tackles, four deflections, two interceptions and one forced fumble with Mississippi State. The 5-foot-11, 210 pound safety is notorious for his ability to deliver big hits, which could make him a box safety, much like the Patriots’ Patrick Chung, at the NFL level.

The Patriots’ depth chart at safety features Devin McCourty, Chung, Duron Harmon, Terrence Brooks and Nate Ebner — with Brooks and Ebner expected to contribute more on special teams. As McCoury and Chung are on the wrong side of 30, the Patriots could begin devising a plan to replace them with young talent.
