Report: Patriots tentatively planning as if Rob Gronkowski will return

The New England Patriots are tentatively planning as if they will have tight end Rob Gronkowski for the 2019 season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Gronk’s agent has said repeatedly that he doesn’t know what the tight end will do. Those close to Gronk say he seems to be leaning toward a return, per Rapoport.

After the Super Bowl, Gronk said he would take time to consider retirement during the 2019 offseason, just like he did in 2018 when he ultimately decided to return to play for another year. Last season, he had 47 receptions for 682 yards and three touchdowns, a decline from recent years, perhaps because he was battling through a pair of injuries.

That said the Patriots are exploring the free agency market for tight ends, per Rapoport. Even if Gronkowski returns in 2019, the Patriots will need to prepare for his eventual retirement, whenever that comes.
