Report: Patriots signing backup kicker to practice squad

The New England Patriots won’t stop at signing one kicker. The team intends to add kicker Younghoe Koo on Friday to join the Patriots practice squad, according to ESPN’s Ian Rapoport. He will be the team’s backup kicker behind Mike Nugent, who New England intends to sign on Thursday.

These transactions come after the Patriots placed Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve after he suffered a season-ending hip injury. Gostkowski played in four games, and hit 7 of 8 field goals but missed four extra point attempts. Nugent seems to be the immediate replacement. If that situation doesn’t go smoothly, the Patriots can look to Koo.

Koo became the fourth player in NFL history to be born in South Korea when he made the L.A. Chargers in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. Koo was 3 of 6 on field goals and 9 of 9 on extra points during that season, and the Chargers cut him after an 0-4 start. He also spent time in the AAF in their lone season of operation.
