Report: Patriots restructure Shaq Mason’s contract

The New England Patriots created $1.4 million in cap space for 2019 after restructuring Shaq Mason’s contract, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

The team converted $1.75 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, which ultimately clears up enough cap for newly acquired wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. New England traded for Sanu on Wednesday and his cap hit for the season is reportedly at $3.779 million.

Mason signed a five-year, $50 million contract last year that included $23.5 million in guaranteed money. Sanu’s contract with New England runs into next season, and he’ll have a cap hit of $6.5 million for 2020.
