Report: Patriots releasing WR Demaryius Thomas

The New England Patriots are cutting wideout Demaryius Thomas, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Thomas joined the Patriots this offseason in free agency, but spent most of his time in New England on the physically-unable-to-perform list due to an Achilles injury in Dec. 2018.

Due to his injury, Thomas didn’t play until the fourth preseason game, when he was stellar with seven receptions on eight targets for 87 yards and a touchdown. That seemed like a positive sign for the veteran, particularly because the Patriots offense is notorious for being challenging.

Thomas will not have to clear waivers. That means that after the Patriots place some of their players on injured reserve, they could add Thomas back onto the roster once they make space. But there’s no guarantee that option is in play.

Thomas is a 10-year veteran who has played for the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos. During his career, He has 688 receptions,  9,330 receiving yards and 62 receiving touchdowns.
