The New England Patriots intend to bring back cornerback Jason McCourty on his contract option for 2020, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The one-year option is worth up to $5.5 million next season. It’s a reasonable sum for a player who projects to play the second or third cornerback spot on the depth chart.
McCourty joined the Patriots in a trade before the 2018 season, and he has been an influential member of the team since then. Most notably, he made a pass deflection in Super Bowl LIII that stopped a Brandin Cooks touchdown for the Los Angeles Rams. That breakup played a huge role in New England winning that Super Bowl.
McCourty will return to an intact cornerback group, which includes Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jonathan Jones and Joejuan Williams. It may be one of the most stacked units in the NFL.
Now the question lingers: What will Jason’s twin brother, Devin, do in free agency? He is a pending free agent, and his market is likely to be robust.
