Report: Patriots host WR Demaryius Thomas and RB T.J. Yeldon for free agent visit

The New England Patriots are staying active on the free agency market. They visited with veteran free agents in receiver Demaryius Thomas and running back T.J. Yeldon, according to multiple reports.

The Patriots had been fairly quiet in free agency until Wednesday when they signed tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins. He joins the incoming class of signings, which include running back Brandon Bolden, defensive tackle Mike Pennel, tight end Matt LaCosse, safety Terrence Brooks and receivers Bruce Ellington and Maurice Harris.

It’s unclear which players the Patriots view as starting-caliber. But Thomas has been a starting-caliber receiver, and New England’s offense needs depth at the receiver position. The question with Thomas, 31, is whether he can still be an effective athlete after suffering an Achilles injury during the 2018 season. Surely, the Patriots wanted to answer that question during their meeting with the veteran.

Yeldon, meanwhile, was a 2015 second round pick who never quite won over the job for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who eventually selected running back Leonard Fournette, the fourth overall selection in 2017. Yeldon served as more of a pass-catching back while Fournette took the carries between the tackles.
