Report: Patriots haven’t approached Devin McCourty to take pay cut

After considering retirement, Devin McCourty decided that he is going to play in the 2019 season — but his contract situation is still uncertain.

The New England Patriots free safety has been a vital part of the team’s defense, but he does have a cap hit of $13.4 million in 2019. Typically, the Patriots will do everything they can to restructure contracts in a way that’s beneficial for the team — but they have yet to approach McCourty.

McCourty is now 31-years-old and has been with the team since his rookie season in 2010. He has accumulated over $50 million with the team in his nine seasons and hasn’t been opposed to restructuring his contract in the past.

He talked about his love for the game when he made his decision to stay in the league for another year, and his three Super Bowl rings likely have a lot to do with it. Last season he accrued 82 tackles, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

The Patriots will likely reach out to McCourty soon about taking a pay cut in order to afford other players, and prepare for another Super Bowl run.
