Report: Patriots don’t have an Andy Dalton trade in mind

Don’t count on the Cincinnati Bengals trading Andy Dalton to the New England Patriots.

It takes two — and the Patriots don’t seem interested, at least according to a new report.

According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots don’t have Dalton in their “immediate plans.”

Plans change, of course. And that’s what a team trying to bargain on a trade price might say. But for the always-mysterious Patriots headed up by Bill Belichick it isn’t too surprising.

Tom Brady might play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers now but Belichick could always prefer another available name like Cam Newton or perhaps Jacoby Brissett.

Call this a big problem for the Bengals though. Chicago went and traded for Nick Foles despite interest in Dalton. Many other possible trade partners have found solutions.

With vacancies filling and a new draft class on the way, the Bengals could be left simply cutting Dalton and receiving nothing in return. Freeing up the $17.7 million is nice but trade return in the form of assets was the presumed goal.
