Report: Patriots DL coach Brendan Daly to join Chiefs coaching staff

Another member of the new defensive coaching staff under Steve Spagnuolo has been revealed.

The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride released a new report stating the Chiefs will hire former Patriots defensive line coach Brendan Daly to take a similar position on their coaching staff. ESPN’s Mike Reiss also confirmed McBride’s report, explaining Daly’s 5-year contract expired following the 2018 season. Daly was considered an in-house candidate to take over for Brian Flores as the Patriots defensive play-caller in 2019, but they ultimately hired Greg Schiano. That seems like it prompted Daly’s departure from New England.

This allowed for an old friend, Steve Spagnuolo, to convince Daly to join his coaching staff in Kansas City. Daly spent three years as Spagnuolo’s defensive line coach when he was the head coach of the St. Louis Rams. Now it appears the two will be reunited in Kansas City under the common goal of making the Chiefs defense better. Daly’s wife is also from the Kansas City area according to the report from McBride.

Daly is known as an energy-giver. He’s the type of coach that players want to play for and go the extra mile for because of his passion and enthusiasm. He’s also known for his creativity when it comes to personnel. He used the different pieces the Patriots had and let them move around to play different roles in order to create mismatches. That could prove useful for a Chiefs team that has a lot of different pieces to toy with along the defensive line.

The big question here is what becomes of Britt Reid, the Chiefs current defensive line coach, and son of head coach Andy Reid? Will he remain on the defensive coaching staff in some capacity? It’s hard to imagine him leaving the staff.

We also don’t yet know what Daly’s exact title will be with the Chiefs, just that it will be a similar position. It’s possible that both Reid and Daly remain on the coaching staff working with the defensive line.

This is the third hire to the Chiefs’ defensive staff that has been reported in the last few days. They’ve also added David Merritt as secondary coach and Matt House as linebackers coach. Look for a full announcement of the defensive coaching staff to come soon.
