Patriots release TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins

The New England Patriots are cutting tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, as first reported by Field Yates of ESPN.

Seferian-Jenkins is stepping away from the NFL so that he can deal with personal issues, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He’s expected to take a month away from the league, and whether or not he will rejoin the Patriots after that time is uncertain.

The Patriots had signed Seferian-Jenkins to a one-year deal in early April.

The Patriots are very thin at tight end after Rob Gronkowski retired, and their next-best option is Ben Watson, who whas been suspended for the first four games. There have been rumors that New England is interested in trading for the Minnesota Vikings’ Kyle Rudolph.
