Report: Patriots cut QB/WR Danny Etling

The run has come to an end for the New England Patriots’ quarterback-turned-receiver, Danny Etling.

Etling was the cut by the Patriots on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. New England cut Etling to make room for newly-acquired tight end Eric Saubert, who joined the team in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons for a conditional seventh-round pick on Monday.

Etling had received praise from teammates this preseason for his team-first attitude. With the Patriots drafting quarterback Jarrett Stidham in the 2019 NFL Draft, Etling was quickly downgraded to fourth on the depth chart behind starter Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer and Stidham.

Etling had practiced with both the special teams unit during the spring and was among the mix at receivers as training camp started.

Saubert, who the Patriots acquired from the Falcons on Monday, was at the final training camp session at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday. Saubert was wearing No. 48.
