Report: Patriots claim former Cardinals TE Jordan Thomas

The New England Patriots have claimed former Arizona Cardinals tight end Jordan Thomas on the waiver wire, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. The Cardinals released him earlier this week.

Thomas’ best season came in 2018 when he had 20 catches, 215 yards and four touchdowns. He spent two seasons with the Houston Texans (2018, 2019), who drafted Thomas in the sixth round out of Mississippi State, before joining the Arizona Cardinals in 2020.

Thomas joins a Patriots’ tight end group which includes Ryan Izzo, Dalton Keene and Devin Asiasi (IR). The group has underwhelmed in 2020 with a combined 10 catches for 122 yards. They have been a contributing factor to New England’s poor production from their passing offense, which has just 192 passing yards per game (3rd worst) and three passing touchdowns (league-worst).

On most teams, Thomas would be tight end depth. In New England, he may end up as the team’s starter in short time, if only because the Patriots are so short on tight end talent.
