Report: Patriots believe Rob Gronkowski will return despite comments

Rob Gronkowski reiterated this past weekend how much he is enjoying retirement, which should have put to rest any ideas of him making a comeback to the football field. But the New England Patriots are apparently not believing what Gronkowski has to say.

According to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, some people inside the Patriots organization believe Gronkowski will rejoin New England once the season is underway and he begins to miss football.

“Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski made a public appearance recently and said he was done with football. What I can tell you is few people, including sources on the Patriots, believe that.

“The belief is that once the season gets going, and Gronkowski starts missing football, he will rejoin the team. It’s not just a hunch, sources say; you can count on it.”

Saying “you can count on it” makes this report very interesting.

It’s hard to say how definitive Gronkowski’s return could be seeing that Freeman’s statement is a prediction of the future, and not necessarily based on something Gronkowski has said recently.

New England could definitely use his help. Now that Ben Watson will be serving a four-game suspension to begin the season, and Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been cut, the Patriots are very thin at tight end.
