Report: Patriots are releasing TE Dwayne Allen

The New England Patriots are releasing tight end Dwayne Allen, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Allen was set to have a cap hit worth $7.3 million in 2019. New England is open to a return at the right price, according to ESPN, but the Patriots will let him enter free agency.

The Patriots acquired Allen in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in 2017 after they drafted him in 2012 in the third round.

With New England, Allen won a Super Bowl, but didn’t put up gaudy passing statistics. He had just three receptions for 27 yards in 2018 and 10 receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown in 2017. Instead, Allen took on a role as a blocking tight end, which he executed well.

Allen’s departure leaves the Patriots with Rob Gronkowski, Jacob Hollister and Stephen Anderson at tight end. Gronk is mulling retirement.
