Report: Panthers won’t bring in new quarterback with Cam Newton injured

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the Panthers won’t be bringing in a new quarterback this week despite Cam Newton’s mid-foot sprain he suffered against the Patriots.

Newton’s diagnosis had to come as a relief. He is only expected to miss a couple of weeks and the team is hoping he’ll be able to play against the Rams Week 1.

In the meantime, the Panthers will roll with Kyle Allen as their QB1.

Fans who think this is a bad idea should take a look at the list of available free agents at quarterback. With Josh McCown having already been signed by the Eagles, there’s nobody who’s remotely viable as a starter outside of Colin Kaepernick.

Since that’s unlikely to happen, Allen is the man for now. He has not performed particularly well this preseason, but he has a chance to change that narrative against the Steelers.
