Report: Panthers to carry 3 quarterbacks for 2019 season

According to a report by Jourdan Rodrigue at the Athletic, the Panthers will indeed be keeping three quarterbacks on their roster for the 2019 season.

This has been the speculation all offseason, at least since the team used a third-round pick on former West Virginia quarterback Will Grier. While Grier obviously still has a lot to learn, Carolina doesn’t want to risk another team picking him up off the practice squad, which is why they’ll be keeping one more QB than usual this year.

The starting spot is obviously taken by Cam Newton, who is recovering from a mid-foot sprain but expected to play Week 1 against the Rams.

The backup job will most likely go to Kyle Allen. While Taylor Heinicke had some good moments this preseason, he ultimately just didn’t get enough reps to keep up with the other quarterbacks competing for a spot.

Teams have until 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday to cut their rosters down from 90 players to 53.
