Report: Panthers signing former Falcons DE Bruce Irvin to 1-year deal

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Panthers are signing former Falcons defensive end Bruce Irvin to a one-year deal.

Irvin was part of a very strong 2012 draft class for the Seahawks as their first-round pick. He spent four years there and won a ring before moving on to the Raiders. He played the second half of 2018 in Atlanta (his hometown) and recorded 3.5 sacks in the last four games.

Despite playing in 106 regular season games and another 11 in the playoffs, Irvin is still a very capable pass rusher. According to Sheil Kapadia at the Athletic, he ranked No. 9 in the NFL last season in sack/hit percentage on pass-rushing opportunities.

Irvin is not just an edge rusher, though. He has a lot of experience playing linebacker, which could be useful as Carolina transitions to a 3-4 or hybrid defensive scheme.
